SPELT
Certified Champ
Champ has proven to be far superior to the older common spelt varieties. It has considerably improved straw strength, although plants range up to 60 inches tall. It has very good resistance to leaf rust, moderate resistance to powdery mildew and is very resistant to wheat spindle streak mosaic. It has consistently out yielded common spelt by a wide margin. Champ's protein content is 1-2% higher than oats or common spelt. Lodging can be a problem with Champ. Caution must be used with nitrogen usage. Underseeding with legumes or grass hay is not recommended because of straw density. Champ's reddish-brown color at harvest is normal and will mature about the same time as a late wheat. Very good winter survival. Use for livestock feed purposes only.
Certified Comet
Comet is an exciting new release exclusive to French's. This true spelt is easily distinguishable from other varieties due to its creamy off-white chaff. Comet averages 16-20 inches shorter than Oberkulmer and 10-12 inches shorter than Maverick. Comet averages about 37 inches tall and will tolerate higher rates of nitrogen. It has excellent standability. Harvest maturity will be about the same as Champ. Comet has tested far above Champ and Oberkulmer in yield, exhibiting a very large kernel and head with much improved test weight and protein content approaching 16%. Comet has excellent winter survival. Comet is recommended for livestock feed.
Certified Maverick
A true spelt licensed exclusively to French’s, Maverick resulted from the efforts of Dr. Howard N. Lafever. Maverick is a white-chaffed spelt variety averaging several inches shorter and maturing 5 days earlier than Champ. Maverick has much improved winter survival over other varieties as well as improved test weight. Its protein content is very acceptable and its 5 year averages are well above Champ and Oberkulmer. In addition, Maverick has demonstrated far superior milling and baking qualities with very good flavor. Maverick also dehulls very easily. We have experienced up to 40% threshed out of the field with normal combine settings. Maverick is THE variety of choice for milling and baking!

Certified Oberkulmer
Oberkulmer is a robust Swiss cultivar tested in Ohio since 1989. Oberkulmer is a true spelt containing no wheat germ plasma in its parentage. It has 3-5% higher grain protein than Champ. Oberkulmer is awnless, has brown chaff, large heads and large kernels. The straw yield is excellent. Plant heights range to 60 inches. Lodging can be a problem, especially with high rates of nitrogen. Adapted for feed or food usage, Oberkulmer has very good milling quality, but only average baking strength.
WHEAT
French's Honey Brand
French's Honey Brand is a recent release out of the AGRA/Sunbeam Extract breeding venture. Honey is two days earlier than Hopewell and slightly shorter. Its standability is excellent and it has excellent winter survival. Honey is resistant to powdery mildew. Two and three year test results show Honey yielding up to 12 bushels per acre over Hopewell and Pioneer 25R26. Honey has excellent milling and baking qualities. It is a bearded variety and therefore has very good deer/wildlife resistance.
French's Mocha
Mocha is an early maturing variety which makes it good for use in double cropping. It is shorter than our other varieties. Mocha has good test weight and a distinctive deep brown color. Mocha has no beard.
Certified Truman
Truman is a full season, awnletted soft red winter wheat. It is moderately tall with good straw strength and excellent winter hardiness. Maturity is comparable to Cardinal. Truman exhibits broad based resistance to fusarium head scab and also above average resistance to septoria leaf blotch. Truman is moderately susceptible to barley yellow dwarf. Do not seed before fly free date.
